Guinness Global Innovators
Overview
The Guinness Global Innovators strategy seeks capital appreciation and invests in high-quality growth companies.
Companies that can sustain faster growth than the market can outperform over a cycle. But past performance is often a poor predictor of which firms can achieve this sustainable growth. That is why the search starts with a pool of companies that are harnessing innovation through exposure to long-lasting, secular growth themes.
The Guinness Global Innovators Fund is designed to capture the benefits of secular growth and innovation themes by investing in companies with the quality characteristics to harness them in the long term.

Scope
To identify quality growth companies which can benefit from these themes in the long term, the Fund targets profitable businesses with quality characteristics such as high returns on capital, strong balance sheets and lasting competitive advantages.
A key risk of growth investing is overpaying for expected future growth. Valuation discipline is central to stock selection, ensuring the portfolio is built on durable fundamentals rather than short-term market trends.
Why invest in a quality growth fund?
- Exposure to secular growth themes – High historic growth in a company is often quickly mean-reverting. Secular growth themes offer a route to sustainable growth over the long term.
- Quality approach – High returns on capital, strong balance sheets and sustainable competitive advantages help us avoid the most speculative opportunities, helping to protect against downside risks.
- Value discipline – With bottom-up, valuation-driven stock selection the portfolio avoids overpaying for future growth.
- High conviction – The Fund invests in 30 broadly equally weighted companies, balancing the benefits of diversification with the ability of each holding to contribute meaningfully to performance. This structure results in a portfolio that is truly differentiated from the benchmark index.
- Low turnover – Investing for the long-term reduces unnecessary trading costs and gives companies time to deliver on their potential, with positions typically held for three to five years.
- Repeatable and independent – Ian Mortimer and Matthew Page have managed the strategy since 2010 with a clear, robust, transparent and scalable process. It filters out much of the noise and hype that surrounds companies to focus on the true signals that drive company valuations. By performing their own company research and analysis, using their own proprietary modelling systems, the managers try to avoid some of the behavioural biases associated with being unduly influenced by market sentiment.
The Guinness Global Innovators Fund is an active growth fund that could be suitable for investors seeking capital growth through the business cycle, rather than the most speculative opportunities, or for a quality growth allocation.
