Growth
Guinness Greater China
Überblick
The Guinness Greater China strategy seeks capital appreciation and invests in high-quality companies with exposure to the development of the Greater China region.
The Chinese economy is the second largest in the world, and is on track to surpass the US to become the largest. The size of China's economy means that even at more modest post-covid rates of growth, a huge increase in wealth is underway. This supports the rise of the Chinese consumer and a larger addressable market for businesses catering to them, creating opportunities for investors in Chinese growth stocks.
The Guinness Greater China Fund invests in high-quality Chinese stocks, profitable companies with exposure to the structural growth themes in China and Taiwan.

Already too big to ignore, growth in China is set for a larger share of investors' equity portfolios in a trend that should further support Chinese share prices.
The Guinness Greater China strategy is designed to benefit from these trends with a process designed to mitigate the risks that accompany growth investing in Chinese stocks.
From a predominantly agrarian society in the 1980s, China has become a diversified economy which is integrated into global supply chains and features a burgeoning middle class. China's stage in its economic development, its policy direction and demographics, and global trends in technology create identifiable structural investment themes which we use to identify areas in which to look for growth companies.
From this starting point, a disciplined investment process incorporates a strict focus on cash returns on investment and an understanding of the structural, regulatory and economic backdrop in China.
What makes quality Chinese stocks?
Some key features of the companies we look for include:
- High return on capital – Where growing operating cashflows are accompanied by good opportunities for further growth.
- Well-structured balance sheets – Stocks with no excessive debt, good governance and activities unlikely to be deemed socially harmful, as identified by our ESG analysis.
- Growth opportunities – Undervalued by the market.
- A carefully structured, repeatable investment process – Based on our own proprietary modelling rather than one reliant on third-party data, leads us to our concentrated, 30-stock portfolio. An equal weighting approach gives us differentiated exposure compared to our peers.
The Guinness Greater China Fund could be suitable for investors looking to harness the drivers of growth in China and Taiwan growth stocks and could form a core China equity holding within an emerging markets allocation.

In July, the Guinness Greater China Fund rose 8.0% in GBP, while the MSCI Golden Dragon Index fell 0.2% and the MSCI China Index rose 7.5%. The month was characterised by a sharp rotation rather than a broad improvement in sentiment: crowded onshore AI and semiconductor shares sold off, while cheaper offshore internet and e-commerce stocks rebounded. The Fund’s significant underweight to Taiwan helped relative performance as the Taiwanese market declined, and its overweight to Consumer Discretionary and stock selection in Industrials and Information Technology also contributed. These benefits outweighed underweights to Financials, Materials, Energy and Utilities and the structural underweights to Tencent and Alibaba. Policy expectations supported markets, but July’s Politburo meeting emphasised faster implementation of existing fiscal measures rather than a major new stimulus package.
