Real asset equities had a challenging Q3 2026 in both absolute and relative terms. The MSCI World Core Infrastructure Index returned -5.6% (USD), behind the MSCI World Index, which rose 1.9%. Higher energy costs prompted major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank, to raise rates again in September, and a global bond sell-off pushed yields to multi-decade highs. Utilities and more highly leveraged real estate bore the brunt of rising yields, while water utilities held up well. HALO: from re-rating to earnings The longstanding valuation discount of capital-intensive companies to capital-light companies has largely closed this year, with the two groups now trading on around 15x and 16x forward earnings respectively. From here, continued performance is likely to depend less on further multiple expansion and more on the delivery of earnings and cashflow growth. Starlink and the outlook for tower companies After the quarter end, SpaceX bought US wireless spectrum licences (the government-issued rights to use specific radio frequencies), advancing its plans to become a rival mobile operator. Telco carriers fell c.10% on the news while tower companies rallied. SpaceX is reportedly in talks to lease space at c.80,000 tower sites, and if it becomes a customer rather than a competitor, the sector could see a further recovery after a tough couple of years.
