The world's population is growing at a rate of nearly 1% per year and is projected to reach nine billion people in the next decade. Over 90% of this growth will come from developing countries, where demand for electricity, cars and consumer goods are having a profound impact on the world's energy balance.
Even with growth in renewables, which comes mainly at the expense of coal, other key energy sources such as oil and natural gas will remain in demand. Oil stocks and natural gas stocks continue to offer compelling long-term investment opportunities for those who understand the underlying supply and demand dynamics.
The investment process is driven 50% by our top-down (macro) views and 50% by bottom-up stock analysis. Rigorous independent analysis of the fundamental drivers of energy markets such as oil supply and demand, OPEC behaviour and natural gas supply and demand, informs a top-down view that drives our energy sub-sector allocation.
A disciplined weekly stock screening process reviews a universe of around 250 energy stocks to identify companies which look attractive on valuation, return on investment, earnings sentiment and price momentum. Those that pass are subject to detailed financial modelling to establish whether there is sufficient conviction to include the stock in our portfolio.
The portfolio comprises our 30 best ideas, unconstrained by benchmark sub-sector weights, such as to super-majors. This structure creates the best balance between maintaining fund concentration and managing stock-specific risk, with liquidity preserved throughout.

July brought renewed disruption to global energy markets as the US–Iran ceasefire ended, flows through the Strait of Hormuz fell back and Iranian-backed Houthi attacks raised risks around Red Sea shipping. Brent crude reached $106 a barrel during the month and closed at $96, while WTI ended at $85. Asian and European LNG prices also rose as Middle Eastern supply remained constrained, although US gas prices fell during maintenance-related limits on LNG exports. The MSCI World Energy Index rose 12.7% in USD, compared with 0.5% for the MSCI World Index. Within the Fund, Equinor, Suncor, Repsol, Cenovus and Valero were the strongest performers. The commentary also examines record refining margins caused by Gulf disruption, attacks on Russian refining capacity and limits on Chinese product exports.
